The 30 Days Squat Challenge has been talked about and many people wonder if it is possible to refine with the simple exercise of the squat.

At the risk of disappointing you, the answer is no! The primary role of squatting is not to make you lose weight. It is primarily used to strengthen and firm the lower body.

Certainly, the repetition of the squat movement encourages caloric expenditure and toning avoids the storage of fat in the thighs and buttocks. In this sense, it is possible to say that the squat makes it possible to initiate a localized slimming. But to lose weight, there is no secret: nothing beats muscle strengthening associated with cardio training to refine!

It will be necessary to bet on an activity like treadmill, elliptical or step.


On the one hand, muscle building serves to increase the basal metabolism, that is, you will burn more calories at rest and in activity. On the other hand, cardio training is used for lipolysis, that is to say the "use" of the fat mass as energy.

To do well, in addition to a healthy and balanced diet, opt for work sessions of one hour (ideally 3 times per week) by combining 50% muscle strengthening and 50% cardio.

For greater muscle tone, always start squatting before an endurance session. This accelerates energy expenditure and therefore burns fat faster.

As you understand, the simple exercise of squatting is not enough to lose weight. On the other hand, it is excellent for firming and strengthening the lower body. If your goal is to refine your thighs and glutes, you will need to use the squat in addition to endurance activity, which will allow you to eliminate the fat mass housed in this targeted area.
