Going to join a gym to lose some weight
Yes diet is 80% and gym is 20% in the pursuit of losing body fat and gaining muscle mass.
I follow a low fat, low carb and high protein 'diet'. Not 'No fat' as food typically with no fat is higher in sugar to compensate on taste. And Not 'No carbs' as you need carbs. Think of food as fuel, you need to consume enough calories to survive then to either a) maintain weight b) lose fat or c) bulk in muscle. 

So you need to ensure what you consume is nutritionally dense. So you pack as much nutrients into your meal as you can. Not all calories are create equal. So 1000 calories of lean meat, veg and salad is not the same as 1000 calories of KFC (unfortunately!)

 just try going to the gym every day for about 3 weeks and get a feel for it , then work on changing something else, dont over whelm yourself, make it part of your routine and your life
