Let's talk about five simple steps that I feel are the most important if you are looking for a personal trainer.
First, I suggest finding a trainer who works independently for a studio or gym. On that note, even someone who owns a studio or a gym. Why is this important? They are less likely to to have an overload of clients like a trainer at a big gym, which translates to more time to focus on you and your goals. You will probably also notice more affordable rates with an independent trainer rather than an employed trainer.
Secondly, shop around and find the male or female that has a personality you can relate with and see yourself working with. The time with your trainer might as well be enjoyable, right?

Third, experience and certifications hold their importance. It's important to find someone who knows how to get you to your goal and has the experience to back it up. If you need to lose weight, find a trainer who specializes in weight loss. Now, certifications are also important and there are some accredited organizations that hold a high ranking such as A.C.S.M., A.C.E., N.A.S.M., or N.S.C.A. I would recommend that you stay with a train who holds one that is nationally accredited.
Fourth, I truly believe that client references are crucial for you to evaluate if the trainer is right for you. You can ask the trainers previous and current clients if they are punctual, organized, keep a positive attitude, goal oriented, focused, all sorts of questions to find out if the trainer matches your requirements.
Fifth, do they practice what they preach? Now, not every single trainer has to look like a Greek god or goddess, but do they follow the same path they are going to teach you. If someone is going to be able to coach you on how to get results they should easily be able to do it themselves. For example, I wouldn't buy supplements from someone who has a "supplements that heal" sign in their car and gets out smoking a cigarette and is not taking their own advice.
